Fresh Ideas Served Daily

In San Mateo, a community at the crossroads of tech culture and city life, Colander Kitchens was born from a chef’s desire to reconnect with diners.

While technology offers convenience, it’s also created distance between restaurants and the people they serve. By bringing multiple concepts together under one roof, we’re creating a relaxed, in-person dining experience with something for everyone. This model allows us to offer more variety while keeping our focus on quality.

At the root of it all is human connection. We believe that good food tastes better in good company.

We envision Colander Kitchens as a place where our vibrant community of families, creators, professionals, and tech innovators come together to share meals and fresh ideas.

About the Owner

Ty Mahler brings over 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry. At just 16, he became the youngest student to attend the New England Culinary Institute. Cooking has taken him around the world, from the Michelin-starred L’Essential and Le Relais du Lac Noir in France, to winning silver in the Taiwan International Culinary Competition, to working at Emeril Lagasse’s flagship restaurant in the U.S.

Mahler later became chef-partner at Roy’s Hawaiian in San Francisco, and went on to co-create Sushirrito, the original sushi burrito concept that helped shape the fast-casual fusion trend. Sushirrito opened in 2011 and now has 10 locations across the Bay Area.
